Ongoing Silent Retreats – Anapana/Vipassana Inspired

Taking this quiet time to befriend your inner silence can be a great chance to deepen your meditation practice and give your nervous system and overloaded brain a chance to exhale. It helps quiet the surface external noise so you can actually hear what’s going on inside of you. It also allows you to notice what happens when you stop performing and start being.

Anapana/Vipassana Inspired Kansas City

Why Choose Silence?

Imagine your brain and your whole life are usually buzzing with noise: social media, work emails, conversations, TV, music, chores, planning, worrying… it’s a constant stream. a constant distraction.

A silent retreat is like hitting the “mute” button on all that. For a set period of time (days, or even just a weekend), you intentionally step away from all external distractions, and especially from talking.

The Vipassana meditation journey is a process of purifying the mind by systematically working through its deepest conditioning. Imagine the mind as an onion, with many layers of accumulated tension and impurities. This process involves peeling back these layers, one by one, until the core of pure awareness is revealed.

Silent Retreat FAQ

We’ve gathered answers to common questions to help you prepare for a deeply transformative experience. Our aim is to ensure clarity and support as you embark on this journey of inner peace and self-discovery.

Differences By Length Of Time

Traditionally, all new students to Vipassana start with the 10 days. At Inntirety, we offer a Vipassana inspired approach to Silence.

Stages of Silence

Before true Vipassana begins, a meditator must first train the mind. The first three and a half days of a 10-day course are dedicated to this preparation. Once the mind is sufficiently concentrated, the deeper work of Vipassana begins.

Vow of Silence: Vipassana Inspired

Our silent retreats are Vipassana inspired but not a true Vipassana center. Inntirety offers a unique opportunity to step away from the everyday hustle and reconnect with your inner self borrowing from the Vipasanna blueprint. We’ve streamlined the sign-up process to make it as simple as possible, allowing you to focus on preparing for a truly transformative experience. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know.

What is a Silent Retreat?

At its core, a silent retreat is a dedicated time to step away from the everyday noise and distractions of life. It’s a unique opportunity to quiet your mind, listen to your inner self, and experience profound peace. Here, we’ll cover the fundamental principles that make these retreats a powerful tool for self-discovery and rejuvenation.

Silent Retreats 101: The Basics

No Talking: This is the big one. You’re encouraged not to speak to anyone, and not even to make eye contact.

No Distractions: This means no phones, no internet, and no journaling. The goal is to remove anything that takes your attention away from your inner experience.

Quiet Environment: Our retreats are held at the Inntirety Healing Center, nestled within a magical 5-acre forest. It’s the perfect peaceful, natural setting to help you feel calm, present, and deeply connect with the natural elements around you.

Focus on Inner Experience: Without the constant external input, your mind starts to quiet down. You will spend time meditating, walking mindfully, practicing gentle yoga, or simply resting and observing your thoughts and feelings.

Recharge and Reflect: The idea is that by removing the usual noise, you can truly hear yourself, gain clarity, reduce stress, and come back to your daily life feeling refreshed and with a new perspective.

Who will be guiding the silent retreat?

Satya Narayan Goenka was the foremost lay teacher of Vipassana meditation of our time. Although Indian by descent, Mr. Goenka was born and raised in Myanmar (Burma). While living there, he had the good fortune to come into contact with Sayagyi U Ba Khin and to learn the technique of Vipassana from him.

The technique taught by S.N. Goenka goes back two and a half millennia to the Buddha. The Buddha never taught a sectarian religion; he taught Dhamma – the way to liberation – which is universal. In the same tradition, Mr. Goenka’s approach is totally non-sectarian. For this reason, his teaching has had a profound appeal to people of all backgrounds, of every religion and no religion, and from every part of the world.

In respect to the ultimate respect & sacredness of this practice, all daily Dhamma Talks are projected on a large screen at Inntirety. Carrie, steward of the land fondly named Inntirety, will be leading group meditations & providing support during your stay.

How do the retreat dates and durations work?

Our silent retreats offer a unique flexible schedule. Unless noted, your Vipassana journey can start any Thursday and end the consecutive Thursday.

This flexibility allows you to align your retreat experience with your personal schedule while still committing to the uninterrupted silence and reflection.

Can I arrive and depart on any day within the 10 day retreat window?

Yes, absolutely. There is a caveat. If you choose to depart before the 10 days is completed, you have not experienced Vipassana. You are welcome to start again any time you would like.

Can I leave the grounds during my stay?

No, this is a residential retreat, and staying on the grounds for the entire duration of your chosen retreat length is a fundamental aspect of the experience.

Here’s why staying on the grounds is so important when taking a vow of silence:

  • Minimizing Distractions: Our modern lives are filled with constant noise, demands, and external stimuli. The purpose of a silent retreat is to intentionally remove these distractions, allowing your mind to quiet and your attention to turn inward. Leaving the grounds introduces the very influences we are seeking to escape – traffic, conversations, digital alerts, and the general busyness of the outside world.
  • Deepening the Practice of Silence: The vow of silence extends beyond simply not speaking. It’s about cultivating an internal stillness. When you remain within the tranquil environment of the retreat, every aspect of your day, from meals to walks to personal reflection, supports this deep, uninterrupted internal work. External excursions would disrupt this flow and the continuity of your practice.
  • Creating a Container for Inner Work: The retreat grounds are designed as a dedicated, supportive “container” for introspection and self-discovery. This contained environment helps to foster a sense of safety and allows for deeper emotional and spiritual processing that might not occur if you were constantly re-engaging with the outside world.
  • Respect for the Shared Experience: While your journey is personal, you are part of a community of individuals also deeply committed to their silent practice. Maintaining your presence on the grounds supports the collective atmosphere of stillness and respect for the silence of others.

By committing to staying on the grounds, you give yourself the best possible opportunity to fully immerse in the silence, gain clarity, and experience the profound benefits of this unique retreat.

How do meals work during the silent retreat?

During your silent retreat, we are committed to providing a nourishing, sattvic diet meaning that it focuses on food which is considered pure and light in energy.

During your silent retreat, we provide three light, fortifying meals daily that align with this principle. We believe that keeping meals light is important for several reasons during a silent retreat:

  • Supports Mindfulness and Clarity: A lighter diet helps to reduce the energetic demands on your digestive system, allowing more energy to be directed towards mental clarity, introspection, and meditation. It can prevent sluggishness and enhance alertness.
  • Aids in Physical and Mental Detoxification: A simpler, clean diet can support the body’s natural detoxification processes, complementing the mental and emotional clearing that often occurs during a silent retreat.
  • Minimizes Distraction: Heavy meals can sometimes lead to discomfort or a desire for conversation. Our light approach helps maintain the atmosphere of quiet and focus.

Our meals are thoughtfully prepared, primarily consisting of seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, fortifying stews, artisan breads, protein bowls, and nourishing options such as hummus and flatbreads (like naan). We also offer a selection of herbal teas throughout the day.

Can I use my cell phone or laptop during the retreat?

No, during our silent retreat, we also engage in a digital detox. We kindly request that you refrain from using cell phones, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices throughout your stay. We understand that these devices are an integral part of modern life, but intentionally disconnecting from them is vital for the profound benefits of this retreat.

Here are a few reasons why a digital detox is so important:

  • Cultivating True Silence: The goal of a silent retreat extends beyond verbal quietude; it’s about quieting the mind. Notifications, news feeds, emails, and the constant urge to check devices are significant sources of mental chatter and distraction that directly counteract the purpose of the retreat.
  • Encouraging Presence and Self-Reflection: Without the pull of external digital stimulation, your attention is naturally drawn inward. This allows for a deeper level of self-awareness, introspection, and connection with your inner landscape, which is often obscured by constant digital engagement.
  • Minimizing External Demands: Even without actively using them, the mere presence of a device can create a subconscious pull or a feeling of obligation to the outside world. Disconnecting fully allows you to truly step away from responsibilities and external demands, fostering a sense of freedom and release.
  • Resetting Your Nervous System: Our digital lives often keep our nervous systems in a state of heightened arousal. A digital detox provides a much-needed opportunity for your brain and body to rest, recalibrate, and experience genuine calm, leading to reduced stress and enhanced well-being.
  • Deepening the Retreat Experience: By removing the digital tether, you create space for greater immersion in the retreat’s practices, such as meditation, mindful walking, and simply being present with nature. This uninterrupted focus allows for insights and clarity that are often elusive in our digitally-saturated lives.

For emergencies, we will provide a contact number that your loved ones can use to reach you. However, for the duration of your stay, we invite you to fully embrace this opportunity for profound digital and mental rest.

What can I do during a silent retreat?

While the retreat is silent and free from digital distractions, there are many enriching activities and practices available to support your journey inward. Our intention is to create an environment where you can truly connect with yourself without external demands.

During your stay, we will provide you with a journal and a pen/pencil for reflection, which are excellent tools for processing thoughts and insights that arise in the silence.

Beyond journaling, you are encouraged to engage in activities such as:

  • Meditation: This is a cornerstone of a silent retreat. You can practice various forms of meditation, focusing on breath, body sensations, or simply resting in awareness.
  • Mindful Walking: Explore our grounds with conscious awareness, noticing the sights, sounds, and sensations of nature without judgment or distraction. This can be a moving meditation.
  • Yoga or Gentle Movement: Engage in gentle yoga postures, stretching, or other forms of conscious movement that help release physical tension and promote energy flow.
  • Rest and Napping: Sometimes, the deepest insights come from allowing the body and mind to fully rest and rejuvenate. Don’t underestimate the power of quiet repose.
  • Nature Observation: Simply sitting in nature and observing the trees, birds, or changing light can be a profound practice for cultivating presence.
  • Simple Chores or Helping Out (Mindfully): If there are very light, optional, and silent tasks available (e.g., tidying a common area, watering a plant), engaging in these mindfully can also be a form of meditation and service.
  • Self-Inquiry: Dedicate time to deeply reflect on questions about your life, purpose, or challenges, using the silence as a catalyst for inner wisdom.

The beauty of a silent retreat is the freedom to simply be without the usual demands of doing. You are invited to listen to your own needs and allow your intuition to guide you in how best to utilize this precious time for your inner peace and well-being.

What if I experience anxiety or need support during the retreat? Can I break silence?

Your well-being and safety are our highest priorities. While the retreat is designed for deep introspection in silence, we absolutely encourage you to seek support if you are experiencing an anxiety attack, emotional distress, or any other significant challenge.

Yes, you can and should break silence to communicate your needs for support.

We understand that stepping into deep silence and introspection can sometimes bring unexpected emotions to the surface. To provide the necessary care, we have established a dedicated Reflection Tent. This is a calm, comforting space equipped with comfortable cushions and blankets, and it will be attended by a facilitator who is there specifically to offer compassionate assistance and guidance.

At Inntirety, this is a safe environment to always express your truth, your needs, and any challenges you may be facing. We are here to support you through your journey, and reaching out is a sign of strength, not a break in your commitment. Please know that you are never alone in this experience.

Can I bring a friend and share a space during our stay?

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to bring a friend or loved one. Sharing this experience can be incredibly supportive and enriching. It offers a unique opportunity for shared growth and connection on a deeper level, even in silence.

Many find that having a familiar presence nearby provides a sense of comfort and subtle encouragement throughout their personal journey. Just keep in mind that when sharing a space with someone you know well, it can be easy to instinctively break silence.

We encourage you both to be mindful of your shared commitment to the vow of silence, even in your private space, to fully embrace the benefits of the retreat.

What activities are included during my stay?

The Silence Journey

What you might experience within your 10 day vow of silence.

Day’s 1-3: Intro to Anapana

  • Purpose: Primarily an introduction to silent meditation or a “reset” for those whom have already completed the entire 10 day Vipassana. It’s about disconnecting from daily noise and getting a taste of inner quiet.
  • Experience:
    • Initial Shock/Adjustment: The first day or so is often spent grappling with the sudden silence and the mind’s constant chatter. Many people find it challenging as their mind processes all the stored information and distractions they usually avoid.
    • Surface Level Quieting: You might begin to experience some calming of the mind and a reduction in stress, but it’s often just scratching the surface.
    • Limited Deep Insight: While some insights can occur, there’s generally not enough time for deep-seated patterns to fully emerge and be processed.
  • Benefits: Stress reduction, mental clarity, a brief digital detox, and a taste of what a longer retreat might offer. It can be a good starting point to see if extended silence is for you.

Days 4 & 5: Transitioning

  • Purpose: Allows for a slightly deeper dive than a 3-day. You start to move beyond the initial discomfort and into a more sustained period of introspection.
  • Experience:
    • Mind Settling: By day 3-4, the mind often starts to settle more profoundly. The “monkey mind” might calm down significantly.
    • Deeper Awareness: You begin to notice subtle sensations and thought patterns more clearly. You might start to observe your habitual reactions to discomfort or boredom.
    • Emotional Processing: Some initial emotional material might start to surface, as the mind has more space to process things it usually pushes away.
  • Benefits: Enhanced mindfulness, increased self-awareness, significant stress reduction, potential for initial emotional release, and a stronger foundation for a meditation practice.

Days 5-7: Detoxing the Mind

  • Purpose: Considered by many to be the minimum length to start experiencing significant shifts and deeper insights. It allows for a more thorough “detox” of the mind.
  • Experience:
    • Profound Quieting: The silence becomes more natural, and the inner noise diminishes considerably.
    • Emotional Depths: You’re more likely to encounter and process deeper emotional patterns, old memories, and subconscious material that has been buried. This can be challenging but also very cathartic.
    • Increased Clarity & Intuition: With the mind clearer, intuition often becomes more accessible, and you might gain fresh perspectives on life situations.
    • Nervous System Shift: Many report a noticeable shift in their nervous system, moving from a “fight or flight” state to a more “rest and digest” state.
  • Benefits: Deep emotional processing, significant self-discovery, enhanced intuition, profound stress reduction, and a more integrated sense of peace. You start to see how your mind habitually works.

Days 7-10: Purification

Benefits: Potential for deep psychological and emotional purification, significant reduction in deep-seated suffering (craving, aversion), profound insights into the impermanence of all phenomena, and the cultivation of sustained equanimity. It’s often described as one of the most challenging but ultimately transformative experiences.

Pulling Back the Layers

The Vipassana meditation journey is a process of purifying the mind by systematically working through its deepest conditioning. Imagine the mind as an onion, with many layers of accumulated tension and impurities. This process involves peeling back these layers, one by one, until the core of pure awareness is revealed.

Please note: This is a Vipassana inspired Silent Retreat.

1. The Surface Level: Calming the Mind

The first step is to quiet the conscious, agitated mind. Through Anapana, the practice of observing your breath, you learn to sharpen your focus. By doing this, you’re not trying to control the breath, but simply to observe it as it is—in and out, long or short, deep or shallow. This practice acts as a filter, settling the gross chatter and distractions on the surface of the mind, preparing it for deeper work.

2. The Vibrational Layer: Witnessing Sensations

Once the mind is calm and concentrated, you can begin the practice of Vipassana. This involves a systematic scan of the body, from head to toe. You’re not looking for thoughts, but for sensations—subtle tingles, pressure, heat, cold, or vibrations. These sensations are the physical manifestations of the deep-seated impurities, or saṅkhāras, that are stored in the body. As you observe them with equanimity, without reacting with craving or aversion, they begin to dissolve. This process is like directly witnessing the mind’s conditioning as it arises and passes away in the body.

3. The Core: Disentangling and Purifying

As you continue this practice, you reach the deeper, more subtle layers of the mind. You start to experience the three universal truths—that everything is impermanent, that craving for permanence leads to suffering, and that there is no solid, separate “self” or ego to be found. By observing the constant arising and passing away of sensations, you begin to systematically cut through the roots of your saṅkhāras. You’re no longer reacting to a surface-level thought but are directly purifying the conditioned patterns at their source.

4. The Ultimate State: Inner Knowing and Liberation

Through persistent practice, you continue to dissolve the layers of conditioning. You cultivate a profound sense of equanimity, where you can witness any sensation—pleasant or unpleasant—without reaction. This is the stage where you are no longer a slave to your past conditioning. You begin to experience a deep inner peace and freedom that is not dependent on external circumstances. The mind becomes clear and pure, allowing you to experience the ultimate reality, or truth, directly. This is the point where the accumulated layers of the conditioned mind have been removed, revealing the unconditioned, pure state of awareness within.

Silent Retreat – Peak Challenges & Breakthroughs

You’re likely to face your most significant mental and emotional obstacles. This can involve intense boredom, physical discomfort, strong emotions, and a feeling of “hitting a wall.” However, pushing through these often leads to profound breakthroughs and insights into the nature of suffering and attachment.

Fundamental Shifts: The longer duration allows for the systematic observation of the mind’s patterns, leading to a deeper understanding of cause and effect in your own experience and potentially a lasting shift in how you relate to thoughts and emotions.
